A Look At Camus

Business World: Is Camus just the 5th wheel in the cognac market?

The Cognac market has long been a Hennessy brand-led field. But after Hennessy, there is a three-corner battle for 2nd place with Martell, Remy Martin and Courvoisier all selling over a million cases per year, but still less than half the volume of leader Hennessy. Not surprisingly, all these top four cognac brands belong to huge liquor corporations. Hennessy of course comes from luxury conglomerate LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), Martell is from Pernod Ricard, Courvoisier from Beam Suntory, and Remy Martin from Rémy Cointreau. The 5th largest but still way behind in terms of volume is Camus, a family-run company for five generations now. The present head of the company is Cyril Camus, the 44-year-old 5th-generation descendant.

The Art of Blending (Cognac)

From YouTube: Cognac has long held a reputation for being a drink consumed by old men sitting by the fireplace, perhaps with a cigar in hand. Working with the BNIC, Flow Films looked at this historic drink through a modern lens -- injecting renewed spirit into the iconic beverage. The film follows mixologists Marcos Tello and Kyle Branche who blend Cognac into cocktails, Michelin-starred chef David Féau who pairs Cognac with food, and passionate Cognac producers who are utilizing new techniques to produce the best possible product.

By giving attention to some of the smallest (Cognac Paul Giraud) and largest (Martell, Hennessy, Remy Martin) craftsmen in the region, Flow Films was able to capture an accurate portrait of Cognac production. Equally entertaining and educational, the film also takes the viewer through the entire Cognac-making process - from the vineyard, to distillation, barrel-making, aging, and, finally, to blending. Unfortunately, tasting is something you'll have to do on your own...

Drinking In Cognac Country -- Star Tribune

In sniffs, swirls and sips, tradition comes alive during a tour of France's famed cognac distilleries.

Here's one thing I learned during a nine-day drink-and-dine tour of Cognac and other towns in western France: Never, ever text a photo of your sumptuous lunch to your wife when she's alone back home, working and taking care of your 8-year-old son.

To be fair to myself, it was work that took me to France last September. Plus, my wife had recently cashed in more than a decade's worth of communal frequent-flier points to take her mom on a ritzy two-week tour of Italy. I figured I had some karmic currency to burn.

New Marketing Campaign For Hennessy Cognac

An ad from the new Hennessy campaign.

Hennessy Goes ‘Wild’ For The Pursuit Of Achievement -- New York Times

Captain Ahab had his white whale. Don Quixote had his quest to restore the age of chivalry. Dorothy wanted to find a way to get home to Kansas. Now, a campaign for a Cognac seeks to celebrate aspiration and the pursuit of goals.

The campaign is for Hennessy Cognac, the best-selling brand in the United States and the world. The campaign personifies the search for success as a “wild rabbit,” asking drinkers, “What’s your wild rabbit?” before declaring: “Never stop. Never settle.”

The campaign is the brainchild of the Droga5 agency in New York, which was selected as the creative agency for Hennessy in April 2011.

Most Expensive Cognac In The World Up For Sale

Most Expensive Cognac In The World Under Auction -- The Telegraph

A Dutch collector is selling some 5,000 unopened bottles of spirits worth more than £5 million, a drinks cabinet that includes the most expensive of Cognac in the world.

Among the bottles collected by Bay Van der Bunt is a 1795 Cognac made in Brugerolle that accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his conquests of Europe.

The hand-blown six-litre Jeroboam bottle is worth £114,500 and, said Mr van der Bunt, is "the last of its kind in the world".

"It travelled with Napoleon's army. You can just see it there lying with the others in the hay cart. After the battle – and probably before – the officers would drink from it," he told the Observer.

My Comment: I agree .... something like that should be left for the ages. But you just know that one day such a bottle will .... eventually .... be opened.
